Pieta
Relief Painting
78cm x 98cm (Framed)

I initially named this painting “lamentation ,” but that name didn’t truly convey the essence of the pain of the survivors، families and loved ones. So, I renamed it to “Pieta,” in the name of all the lives taken on the path to freedom.
– For the the victims of the mass executions of political prisoners and Bahai believers in 1988
– For the chain murders of Iranian dissident and intellectuals 1988–98
– For the students of university dormitory raids in 1999
– For the martyrs of Green Movement in 2009
– For the martyrs of the protests 2017-2018
-For the martyrs of the bloody Aban/November 2019
– For the martyrs of Mahsa Movement since 2022
– For the nature of this land on the path of destruction ,
– For us, who carry life on our shoulders like burden!
– For us, whose veins grown out of the roots of this land, are torn from the wounds and pain!

On 16 September 2022 began an uprising in Iran, following the death of the Iranian-Kurdish girl ‘Mahsa-Jina Amini’ in the custody of so-called morality police and for not respecting the Sharia dress-code.
The furious Iranian women cut their hair in protest of her death, which is an ancient Persian tradition for expression of collective mourning and protesting. This has also become a symbolic gesture to express solidarity with Iranian women worldwide.
Mahsa’s name has since crossed borders, languages and cultures and the trio of “Woman, Life, Freedom” has reverberated around the world.
This relief painting pays tribute to the courageous Iranian demonstrators who risk their lives in fight for freedom as well as those who stood in solidarity with them.

The authorities in Iran have executed 4 protesters since the uprising of September 2022. These four young demonstrators were found guilty by sham trials that lasted less than a month with no access to advocate.
They became hero’s and their names are now widely known. Their execution reverberated the voice of Navid Afkari, a wrestler who also got executed in 2020 with no evidence by sham trials, whose words from behind the bars touches almost everyone:
People! It is only logical that I will fight for my life; and as per the evidence, all clues are an affirmation to my innocence. All the evidence that we have collected and everything that I am saying right now, is only here to let you know that if I ever get executed, in the 21st century and with all the human right organizations, the UN or security council or the whatever else, an innocent human being, which had tried to the best of his might and fought, to have his voice heard, was hanged.
